Illustrations by Smrekar and Gaspari for the Slovenian Beekeeper Gazette

Abstract

At the suggestion of Avgust Bukovec, which was made at the general assembly of the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association, the Slovenski čebelar gazette was equipped with new artwork. The title page and four vignettes were created by the young painter Hinko Smrekar (1883–1942). In 1913, Smrekar also drew vignettes for the reports of the observation stations led by Bukovec. In 1922, a new cover of Slovenski čebelar was drawn by Dragotin Humek (1877–1958). In 1925, Avgust Bukovec became the editor of Slovenski čebelar. The following year, the magazine sported a new cover page, an illustration of one of the columns and initials – drawn by Maksim Gaspari (1883–1980). Gaspari also created illustrations for Cvetko Golar’s poem Čebelarjeva ženitev (Beekeepers’ Wedding), which was published in Slovenski čebelar in 1927. As early as 1913, he also drew an illustration for a label on the association’s honey jars. The anniversary issue of Slovenski čebelar (May 1934) featured a portrait of Anton Janša on the cover (drawn by Matej Sternen). From 1934 onward, Slovenski čebelar had a more modest cover with stylised bees and other motifs. There are two well known caricatures of Avgust Bukovec. Hinko Smrekar depicted him in a caricature probably around 1926, while France Uršič’s caricature of Bukovec was published in 1929 in Ilustriran Slovenec (The Illustrated Slovene).
