August Bukovec’s contribution to the organisation of Slovenian beekeepers between 1905 and 1920 – ‘We must arise from our own strength’

Abstract

In the years from 1905 to 1914, August Bukovec made a significant contribution to the organisation of Slovenian beekeepers in Carniola, Carinthia and Primorska, which were separated by the administrative borders of the Austrian provinces. Following World War I, when the Austrian provincial borders were abolished, the reorganisation of Slovenian beekeepers took place. Bukovec led the creation of new rules according to which Slovenian beekeepers were connected to the national beekeeping organisation through branches and branch associations. The new rules enabled Slovenian beekeepers from the then Slovenian territory and part of Carinthia to enter the Beekeeping Society for Slovenia in 1920. For beekeepers in Styria, Bukovec was later the initiator of the establishment of the Association of Beekeeping Branches for the Maribor Region. Avgust Bukovec’s nationwide activities from 1905 onwards made a key contribution to laying the organisational foundations on which the national beekeeping organisation still operates today.
