Abstract

The article presents a translation of the first beekeeping book by Anton Janša, entitled Abhandlung vom Schwärmen der Bienen, which was published in German in 1771. The introduction provides an overview of the original and the content of the work, as well as the first translation by Peter Pavel Glavar and the second translation by Avgust Bukovec. In the second part of the article, a comparison is made of basic beekeeping terminology in both Slovenian translations and with that of the modern state. The conclusion is that the basic terminology has remained unchanged, e.g. bee, brood. In those places where there are differences between the two texts, it turns out that the term attested by Bukovec is often also a modern beekeeping term, e.g. queen cell, natural swarm. In a few individual cases, however, the terms cited by Glavar have been preserved in modern beekeeping terminology, while those attested by Bukovec are outdated. One such example is the Slovenian word for an apiary, which Glavar termed as čebelnjak while Bukovec termed it as uljnjak.
