Avgust Bukovec, the initiator of the control of honey

Abstract

In 1932, Avgust Bukovec, who initiated the control of honey as early as in 1925, put together a regulation based on the example of Swiss beekeeping, thus laying the foundations for the control of honey in Slovenian beekeeping. Independently of the system at that time, in 1999, through the establishment of the collective trademark Slovenian honey of controlled quality, the foundations were laid for Slovenian honey with a protected geographical indication, which is also recognised in the EU. Given the several parallels that can be recognised in both systems – from 1932 and 1999 – Avgust Bukovec and like-minded people were true visionaries, and his ideas are still relevant today. It can be said that the control of honey in Slovenian beekeeping dates back to 1932, when it began to be implemented on the basis of the regulation put together by Avgust Bukovec. The system as we know it today, in the higher quality scheme of Slovenian honey with a protected geographical indication, began to be built in 1999 under the leadership of Milan Meglič.
