August Bukovec and his contribution to the progress of Slovenian beekeeping

Abstract

Avgust Bukovec’s numerous activities, which cover his six decades of work in the field of beekeeping, are described here. He was the initiator of the control of honey. He made an extensive contribution to the knowledge and suppression of bee diseases, such as severe bee brood rot, also known as American foulbrood. He strived for accident insurance for damage caused by bees and for an insurance fund for compensation for damage due to bee diseases. Bukovec was an avid supporter of the preservation of the racially pure Carniolan honey bee and for its legal protection, which would be based on an appropriate beekeeping law. He contributed to the operation of the first breeding and establishment of the first selection station in Slovenia, as well as the establishment of breeding areas. He worked to establish a beekeeping school, the construction of a social apiary and a beekeeping headquarters for the association. Bukovec made an important contribution to the operation of observation stations.
